Trippy Tales # 53..."The Haw Branch Haunting"

Ghosts of Haw Branch Plantation

"Built in 1745 on 15,000 acres by Colonel Thomas Tabb and his wife, Rebecca Booker, the Virginian mansion had fallen into ruin when it was purchased in 1964 by Cary and Gibson McConnaughey. Gibson remembered visiting and playing at the huge house when she was a girl, and her grandmother, Harriet Mason Jefferson, lived there. The home hadn’t been in the family for the last fifty years.

The McConnaugheys spent a great deal of time, money, and effort in the renovation of the huge estate which included a moat, massive chimneys, gardens, slave quarters, and outbuildings. There are two graveyards on the land, one for the family and one for the slaves.

Cary, Gibson, their children, and two dogs, moved into the antebellum home in 1965. Four years after that, an elderly cousin sent the McConnaugheys a gift. The cousin told the family that it was a pastel painting of a young woman, who was supposed to have been a distant relative. Her name was Florence Wright. The portrait had been done in a summer house in Massachusetts. Before the painting could be completed, the 24 year old girl died suddenly from a massive stroke while playing the piano. Florence had never visited Haw Branch.
When the McConnaugheys opened the crate containing the painting, they were surprised to find that charcoal, rather than pastels had been used to create the piece.

Hanging it over the fireplace in the library, they quickly forgot about it and went on with their lives. A few days later, Gibson was in the basement when she heard ladies’ voices upstairs in the library. Shouting that she would be right up, Gibson thought she had visitors.

Arriving at the library a few moments later, the room was empty. So were the entire house and the parking lot.

A few months later, Cary was sitting in the library reading when he glanced up at the portrait and noticed that a charcoal rose was turning pink! When he walked to the picture, he saw that the girl’s dark hair was lightening, and her gray skin was starting to take on a peach tone!

The picture continued to change until it was a vibrant, colorful piece. The girl became a vibrant redhead with dazzling blue eyes. She was sitting in a green chair next to a jade colored vase holding a soft pink rose.

The voices of women talking and laughing were heard intermittently during the months that the portrait was changing. After the picture was completely transformed, the voices were no longer heard.

Other odd occurrences have taken place though. The painting once mysteriously fell to the floor where her daughter and a friend had been sitting only moments after the girls had moved.

When the painting fell and the frame broke, they were able to discover the name of the artists at last: J. Wells Champney. He had died falling down an elevator shaft in New York City.

Not long after that, in the early morning hours of November 23, 1965, the McConnaugheys were awakened to the sound of a woman screaming. The entire family gathered at the foot of the steps to the attic. No one, not even the dogs, who were shaking with terror, were brave enough to check out what might be causing the screams.

A few months after that incident, the family was in the library watching television when they heard the sound of a heavy object being dropped on the lawn. They have continued to hear that sound at various intervals, even in the daylight.

Every six months on May 23rd and November 23rd, the family hears a woman screaming in the attic.

Apparitions have also been spotted in the home including that of a slim young girl in a floor length dress, a lady in white standing by the fireplace in the drawing room, a giant bird with a wing-span of more than six feet, a floating housekeeper, and a lantern suspended in mid-air coming from the barn. The smell of fresh oranges and roses sometimes wafts through the air, a rocking chair in the attic is sometimes heard creaking, furniture can be heard being dragged across the attic floor, heavy footsteps can often be heard going up and down the stairs, and lights go on and off for no reason.

One night when the McConnaughey boys slept in the old slave quarters with some friends, they heard cowbells in the pasture, although there was not a cow around.

In the basement, there is a mysterious sealed room that measures four by six feet and is completely blocked off with brick. The family animals are quite intrigued with the chamber. No one seems to know why it is there.

One last mystery: the previous owner of the house died a mere few hours after signing over the deed to the house!

As far as I can ascertain, Haw Branch is still owned by the McConnaugheys. They have both written historical books on Amelia County, Virginia, and do give tours of their home.

Haw Branch is located in central Virginia, twenty-six miles west of Richmond on Highway 360."

Trippy Tales # 52..."Lovely Spooky House"

"Lovely Spooky House"
By Carrol @ your true tales
"I lived in an old two-story house in a small town called Amonate. This was in 1978. My husband and I rented it from a very old lady. She and her husband had lived there since they were married, but she moved in with her sister, I guess because she was too old to be alone.
I fell in love at once with the house. It was lovely. The lady told me it was very old and that Civil War soldiers had hidden out there during the war. It had a beautiful winding staircase that led up to three bedrooms. I noticed a red stain on the top of the stairs that led down and into the kitchen where a larger stain was. The old gal said her husband had been accidently shot and the stains were from where he dragged himself down the stairs and made it to the kitchen before dying! Well, that was kinda creepy.
I scrubbed and scrubbed, but it would not come off. Downstairs had a living room, kitchen, bath, and a large room I called the ballroom. It had mirrors all around the walls and nothing else except a bar over in a corner. Lots of room for dancing, as I imagined there had been many parties there. We settled in and everything was ok. The thing I noticed first was that I could never take an afternoon nap upstairs because every time I tried it was as if someone were shaking the bed, so I'd get up.
One winter morning, not long after we moved in, I was going to go back to bed after sending my husband off to work. It was still dark outside so I thought I'd lay down for awhile. I decided to leave the light on in the ballroom, which was at the foot of the stairs. I lay down and was getting comfy when I started hearing voices. It was as if there were a large gathering, but far away so that the sounds were muffled. I could hear a man's laughter. It really scared me. My first thought was that someone has broken in to rob me. I grabbed my husband's shotgun and started for the stairs. The hair stood up on my neck as I reached the top of the stairs, for there were no lights on now in the ballroom. The house was very dark.
I slowly crept down to the foot of the stairs, now hearing only my heart beating. I quickly flipped the lights back on and there was nothing, not one thing out of place.
Each day around 1:30 p.m., as I'd sit watching the soaps, I could hear footsteps running up the stairs. It happened every day at the same time. This is strange, too. The living room had a large walk-in closet. On the outside of the closet there were half a dozen bolt locks. I wondered why? On the door that led to the living room were several bolt locks also. The fireplace in there had been completely covered over with wallpaper. I took it off, naturally.
One day I was cleaning the hearth when I heard dogs. Many dogs as if it were a fox hunt or something. The thing is, the sounds were coming from the fireplace. I ran outside thinking maybe there were dogs barking and the sounds were coming down the chimney, but there were no dogs anywhere and all was quiet. When I returned to the fireplace and bent down, I could still hear the dogs, but they seemed to be getting farther away until the sounds faded away completely.
But the scariest thing of all happened early one morning. As before, my husband went off to work and I went back to bed. It was getting daylight just so I could see everything, but still not yet daylight. There began this pounding sound as if someone were beating the door down wanting to be let in. I was so scared again, thinking as usual that somebody was trying to break in. So I started downstairs again, shotgun in hand, only when I got downstairs, the sound was not coming from the front door, but from somewhere in the living room! The pounding was constant, non stop. I peeked into the room and realized the pounding was in fact coming from inside the closet! It was as if someone were pounding with their fists trying to get out. I yelled, "What do you want?" But the pounding continued. I stood frozen in my tracks for what seemed at least five more minutes and then suddenly, it stopped. It took another five minutes or more to get up the nerve to open the closet door. I was half expecting to see something jump out and grab me, but when I swung open the door, nothing!
I can't explain to you how creepy this was. I wonder to this day if someone were being locked in that closet and maybe died there. Why all those locks? We moved after that incident. My husband also felt bad vibes there. Although I loved the house, I just think some really bad things happened there."

Trippy Tales #50...Haunted Happenings!

More spooky stories from the paranormal archives @ about.com!

"Dead Motorcycle Guy"

"I moved into an apartment not knowing anything about the previous tenant. One night I woke up, but couldn’t move any part of my body. (This used to happen infrequently.) I opened my eyes and saw this male standing in the doorway of my bedroom staring into the mirror over my dresser, which was right in front of the doorway. I can still see him. I was frightened and closed my eyes and pretended to be asleep. After a few minutes, I opened my eyes again and he was gone. I did tell this to my friend who lived next door and she said that I had just described the guy who had lived in my apartment and was killed in a motorcycle accident. I had to move. I was too frightened to sleep in the bedroom at night."

"Shadow In The Underpass"
"About 13 years ago, several of my co-workers and I went to a small fair in Brewster, Ohio, which is located in the northeast part of the state. The main street into town has an underpass, which is lit, that goes underneath train tracks. The Wheeling-Lake Erie Railroad headquarters was located directly beside the underpass. We had walked about a half mile to the fair and were returning to our cars. It was about 11pm.

When we reached the underpass heading away from town, my friend Tom G. , told his girlfriend and I to wait for him while he went up the hill to the tracks to relieve himself. The other people in our party had kept on walking and were almost out of sight. As Tom's girlfriend and I waited on the sidewalk for him, we heard him scream! He came running down the hill, still screaming and ran past the both of us. We were wondering what was wrong with Tom when I saw his girlfriend look down at the sidewalk. She then ran to catch up with Tom.

I was standing there by myself when I saw it. It looked like a person's shadow, a silhouette of a head and shoulders but stopped at what would be the chest. It wasn't my shadow because it was totally detached from me and it's head was near my feet. At first I thought it was another person's shadow and I looked down the sidewalk. There wasn't anybody there. By this time I was well into the tunnel of the underpass which, as I said before, was lit. The shadow remained as strong as ever. Also two cars came down the street and their headlights passed across it but it still remained.

Even though it was summer, the closer the shadow came, the colder it got. The shadow traveled across the ground and came toward me. As soon as it reached my feet it disappeared. I then ran to catch up with Tom and his girlfriend. I asked Tom what it was we just saw. He said he didn't know, but when he was up next to the tracks, he heard a rock overturn and this thing came out from under it and chased him down the hill! I talked about this to a friend of mine and she said it was probably the spirit of someone who had been hit by a train and that's why the shadow was cut across the chest. Tom is in denial about what he saw, but I believe I came in contact with a shadow person."

"Ghost At The Bar"

"About four years ago, I moved to an apartment that was right across from a bar with a very peculiar name, "Shiminski's". It was a weird little dingy, lowlife sort of tavern with a certain 1970s dive nuance to it; you had to see to understand. One night I was bored with TV. It was about seven o'clock and I looked out my window to the old ratty tavern with the yellow sign on the corner, and for some reason I just had to go over and have a beer. I got my jacket, throwing regard to the wind and headed down the two flights of stairs and out the front door across the street over to the old place.

I finally got there and pulled open the 1970s dingy-looking solid door and entered a really foul-looking dive, which was almost entirely barren. I said what the hell and went up to the bar at a stool as an old bartender came up who looked pretty damn weathered himself as I ordered a Budweiser. The beer came up and I paid him, with a tip, and sat there for a few minutes and drank my beer, looking around the place as the curmudgeonly bartender was talking with an older black man at the other end of the bar.

Suddenly I felt the deepest, most depressing sadness overcome me as I caught something out of the corner of my eye next to me. I turned and there was an old woman in a red knit sweater with a really leathery skinned look to her sitting right next to me that I didn't see or hear come up and sit down. Her face was staring down at the bar, then up to the area behind the bar like she didn't see me at all. I looked at her for a second as the energy of sorrow and negativity was almost just like pouring off of her. It was such a miserable feeling like a great loss or something. Her hair looked like she was perhaps living on the street all black and in matted strands and her clothes looked like they would smell, but there was no scent to it. I looked back forward and sipped at my beer again thinking maybe I'd have a conversation with her, but then when I turned to maybe talk to her there was not only no one at all there, but the nearest bar stool wasn't even that close to me.

I just shook my head as I then stood up looking around me as the bartender caught my eye and came up and asked me if I needed something. I was nearly choking on that last sip of beer. "I'm gonna ask you a crazy question," I said to the bartender. "Was there just a woman here?" He just looked at me cockeyed and gave me a humorous anecdote with a smile about a woman being in this kind of place, but I asked him again seriously and he said to me confidentially that it has been rumored to have happened before where people occasionally claim to have seen a homeless woman dressed in rags (as he put it) in the bar as he then admitted to have even felt a presence from time to time there like a breeze when he opens and closes sometimes.
The story gained the attention of the older black man who came over and asked what was up. After a bit of a conversation about it for a few minutes, he said that he thought it was a woman who killed herself out back of the establishment after it opened in the early 70s. He has been in the neighborhood for decades and said that was the only thing he remembered that it could be. The woman jumped off of the roof supposedly and used to live in the same building somewhere. They told me about a man that claimed he saw a woman sitting at a table with him then disappeared and then about a bartender that walked to the end of the bar to serve an older female customer and when he got there, there was no one there. He thought she had fallen or something, but there was no one in the bar at all. I just finished my beer and went to head out after a bit of talk, but that was the freakiest thing that I have ever encountered. There is no doubt that there was an old haggard gypsy-looking woman sitting right next to me and I looked directly at her face (which appeared solid) as she stared off in her own world at the bar back. And even weirder (???) was she floating in midair beside me with no stool under her? The thought really freaks me out, with absolutely no explanation for it whatsoever!"
